American Economic History

Economics 1740

This course surveys aspects of American economic history from just before European settlement to recent times.  Economics 1740 meets the American Institutions (AI) requirement.  There are two midterms and a final exam plus a short term paper.  This course is reading intensive.  The lectures and the reading interact with each other but do not duplicate each other.  About one-third of the readings are not covered in the lecture and about one-third of the lectures are not covered in the reading and about one-third of the lectures and readings overlap.  To help you stay on track, powerpoint presentations of the lectures are posted below:
