Anth 1050: Lectures and Reading Assignments
This page contains slides and reading materials. The associated
podcasts can be
found here. Podcasts
from previous semesters are here.
In the list below, the "bullets" (filled circles) indicate
lecture topics. Click on one, and you'll get the slides I showed in
class. Under each lecture topic, the open circles indicate reading
assignments. Many of these are clickable too and take you to the
reading itself, in pdf format. You'll need a pdf reader such as
Adobe Acrobat Reader or xpdf. Many of the pdfs are large files, so
be prepared to wait a minute after you click, especially if your
connection is slow. If the reading is under copyright, you'll be
asked for a username and password. If you didn't get this in class,
then email me (rogers at anthro dot utah dot edu).

The Eye's Grand Design
-
In May of 2010, New Scientist published
an
article challenging the view that the vertebrate retina is
installed backwards. Everyone agrees that the photo-sensitive cells
face away from the light. Nonetheless, recent research shows that
the tissues of the retina are beautifully adapted to transmit light
with a minimum of scattering and distortion. This has led to wild
controversy. Creationists claim these new findings demolish the
view that there is anything maladaptive about the design of the the
vertebrate eye. As they prepared their article, the writers
at New Scientist solicited a response from Ken Miller, a
well-known evolutionist. Although they quoted from that response in
their own article, they never published it in full. It is now
posted here.
I thank Ken Miller for permission to post it.
