Due to the mountains, the average annual precipitation is 16" (61" of snow) at the Salt Lake International Airport and 20" (80 to 100" of snow) on the benches (shorelines of a prehistoric lake) by the mountains. This compares to Utah's overall average of 10 inches - which explains why 80% of the population of Utah lives on the Wasatch Front.

Most precipitation is in the form of snow. The wettest months are April and October, with average precipitation of about 2"; July is the driest, at 0.7" of precipitation. The relative humidity ranges from 70-79% in January to 22-52% in July.

Salt Lake City is in USDA Zone 5. The freeze-free period lasts an average of 167 days, from April 30 to October 15. Daily temperatures swing from the sixties to the nineties in the summer and from the twenties to the high thirties in the winter. There are an average of five days over 100°F and two days under 0°F annually. Salt Lake experiences temperature inversions during the winter, trapping smoggy air in the valley.
