2. What’s the textbook for this class?

Economics and Consumer Decisions, 3rd Edition (2013), by Michael L. Walden and Jessie X. Fan. Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company. ISBN 978-1-4652-2538-2.

3. How do I register for the midterm and final exams?

The midterm and finals are proctored exams managed by UOnline. You need to register for these exams and then take these exams at a UOnline site. You can get on UOnline at https://www.uonline.utah.edu/ to get more information about how to register for these exams. If you have questions regarding registration or need special accommodations, please contact UOnline directly.

4. When is the latest I can register for the exams?

If you are near Campus or in a place where the UOnline has a testing site (for a list of testing sites, please visit UOnline at https://www.uonline.utah.edu), you have up until one day before the exam to register. If you are in an area where no UOnline testing site exists, then you need to contact UOnline at least two weeks before the exam to make arrangements.

5. Can I take notes to the paper-based exams?

You can have a 3x5 index card and a non-financial calculator with you when you take the paper-based exams. You may write anything you deem useful on the 3x5 index card, double-sided if you so wish. I will provide four formulas on both exams: FVFS BOM, FVFS EOM, PVFS BOM, and PVFS EOM.

6. Can I take this class from out of state?

Yes, you can. All weekly lessons and quizzes are online, so there should be no problem with these weekly activities. The only arrangement that is different from taking it in state is the two paper-based exams. You need to contact UOnline to find out whether there are designated testing sites in your city or town. If so, UOnline will mail the paper-based exams there and you will take the exams in those designated locations. If there are no designated testing sites in your city, then you need to work with UOnline to locate a suitable facility for these exams. Please contact UOnline as early as possible to make arrangements.

7. Why can I not open the syllabus?

The syllabus is in .pdf format. That is, you need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to open it. Adobe Acrobat Reader can be downloaded for free at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

8. If I open a real quiz, do I have to finish it in one setting?

Yes, you do. And you need to finish it within the time limit given, which is 60 minutes. You also need to finish it before the weekly quiz deadline, which is at 11:59 pm every Saturday.

9. If I open an assignment, do I have to finish it in one setting?

No, you don’t. You can access the assignment multiple times as long as you submit before the deadline. That means you can open it, work on it, save your answers, exit, and then come back again at another time. However, you can only submit the homework once. And you must submit it before the deadline in order to get credit for it.

10. Can I get extra credit for this class?

Yes, please refer to the syllabus under “Makeup and Extra Credit Policy” for details.

11. How is my final grade computed?

There are three components to your grade:

  1. Quizzes are 11% of your grade. Your lowest quiz grade is dropped so only11 quizzes are counted with 15 points each so the total is 165 points. If, for example, you get 130 out of the 165, then your total points on quizzes is (130/165)*11 = 8.67.
  2. Homework assignments are 15%. There are 13 homework assignments worth a total of 161 points.  If, for example, you get 140 out of the 161, your total points on homework assignments is (140/161)*15=13.04.
  3. 37% for the midterm and 37% for the final. The exams are 60 points each. If, for example, you get 50 points on the midterm and 55 points on the final, your total points on exams is (51/60)*37+(55/60)*37=65.37

Your total points will be 8.67+13.04+65.37=87.05, which is in the “B+” range. If you have earned extra credit of 1 point, then that will raise your total to 88.05, which is an “A-”.
