STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE TURKISH ECONOMY: A SOCIAL
ACCOUNTING MATRIX ANALYSIS

The Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) has been used as a useful
tool for policy analysis for many developing countries. The aim
of this paper is to analyze the major characteristics of the Turkish
economy based on 1996 SAM. As the vast amount of data need exists,
SAM has not been established for Turkish economy recently. However,
with the help of new 1996 Input-Output Tables, this paper establishes
a consistent SAM for 1996 Turkish economy with detailed explanation
of data collecting and processing. Then it overviews the main
structural features of the Turkish economy based on 1996 SAM.
