HOW STRONG ARE SECTORS LINKED TO EACH OTHER? AN INPUT - OUTPUT
ANALYSIS FOR THE CASE OF TURKEY
Ester Biton RUBEN (Yıldız Teknik Üniversitesi)
The purpose of this paper is to determine and explain the trend
in the inter-sectoral linkages for the case of Turkey. The main
questions to be answered are: Are inter-sectoral linkages getting
stronger or weaker in Turkey? What are their implications for
employment generations?
To answer these questions an input - output analysis will be
made using the I/O tables for Turkey for the years 1979, 1985,
1990, and 1996. The analysis of inter-sectoral likages will take
place in two different ways. First, linkages between manufacturing
and services will be analyzed for the cited years in order to
determine how dependent they are on each other. Second, linkages
between different industries of the manufacturing sector are calculated
to find out their direct and indirect employment generation efects.
The economic policy implications of the findings will also be
discussed through the paper.
